Parking Permit For Ontarian With Disabilities

The Accessible Parking Permit (APP) is designed to provide an easier way to get access to different locations for people with disabilities. A valid permit must be shown clearly on the vehicles’ sun visor or front dash.

What Is The Benefits?

Permit holders have the right to park in designated disabled parking, standing and stopping areas. In some cities in Ontario, holders may park their car without paying to the parking meter. For example, “Holders may park at on-street parking meters or pay and display machines without putting a coin in the meter/machine during the hours of legal operation.” Quote from the toronto.ca. However, every city has its own regulation, make sure you understand them to avoid any parking violation.

5 Types Of Accessible Parking Permits:

  • Blue Permit: This is for disabled Ontarian who are permanently disabled. It is valid for 5 years, but can be renewed without re-certified by a health practitioner.
  • Orange Permit: This is for disabled Ontarian where their disability status is subjected to change. It is valid for 5 years, and required to be re-certified by a health practitioner upon renewal.
  • Red Permit: This is for disabled Ontarian who has short term disability ranging between 2 months to 1 year. It is not renewable.
  • Green Permit: This is issued to company or non-profit organization own or lease vehicles that are mainly used to transport people with disabilities. It is valid for 5 years, and is renewable.
  • Purple Permit: This is for those who traveled outside of Ontario, it allows you to park your car at an Ontario airport for up to 1 year.

Who Is Eligible?

According to the Service Ontario’s website,

“You can apply for an accessible parking permit if any of the following medical conditions apply to you:

  • you can’t walk without assistance of another person, brace, cane, crutch, a lower limb prosthetic device or similar assistive device or require the assistance of a wheelchair
  • you suffer from lung disease to such an extent that forced expiratory volume in 1 second is less than 1 litre
  • a portable oxygen is a medical necessity
  • your cardiovascular disease impairment classified as class 3 or class 4 to standards accepted by the American heart association or Class 3 or 4 according to the Canadian cardiovascular standard
  • you are severely limited in the ability to walk due to an arthritic, neurological, musculoskeletal or orthopaedic condition
  • your vision is 20/200 or poorer in the better eye with or without corrective lenses or the greatest diameter of the field of vision in both eyes is 20 degrees or less
  • you have a condition or functional impairment that severely limits your mobility”

How To Apply?

There are two parts to the application. You will need to fill out the first part, and the second is to be completed by your qualified practitioner. A qualified practitioner could be a licensed physician, chiropractor, registered nurse practitioner (extended class), physiotherapist, occupational therapist, chiropodist or podiatrist. 

Once the application is filled out, simply mail that to the ServiceOntario Center at P.O. Box 9800, Kingston ON K7L 5N8

Service Ontario does not charge you anything to apply. However, your health practitioner may charge a fee to fill out the application. The delivery time is approximately 3 weeks by mail.
