As you know, I work with many families who have loved ones with intellectual disabilities. One topic that often comes up is what happens when their children reach adulthood.
Many parents wonder: What opportunities are available for their adult children to continue learning, develop practical skills, and become part of the workforce?
These are important questions, and they are part of what led me to connect with Concord in the City.
Getting to Know Concord in the City
Concord in the City is a registered Canadian charity that supports adults with intellectual disabilities. The organization offers full-time and part-time programs for adults who have aged out of the school system, with a focus on continuing education and opportunities for personal development.
I recently had the pleasure of collaborating with Concord in the City by sponsoring coffee at their Treat Accessibility event.
(A special thank you to Melissa Ray, COO of Concord in the City, for the opportunity to be part of this wonderful event and for her dedication to making a meaningful difference in the disability community.)
More Than Just a Cup of Coffee!!!
One of the highlights of the event was seeing the dedication and hard work of the team, including individuals with intellectual disabilities who are employed by the organization. It was truly encouraging to see everyone working together, contributing their skills, and taking pride in what they do.
Thanks to their hard work, we were able to serve over 250 cups of coffee to event participants!!!
For me, it was about much more than serving coffee. It was an opportunity to witness firsthand how meaningful employment can provide individuals with a sense of purpose, accomplishment, and belonging.
Connecting with Families
Another rewarding part of the event was having the opportunity to meet and chat with families in the disability community. We had some wonderful conversations about topics that are often on families’ minds, including estate planning, ODSP benefits, and RDSP planning.
These conversations reminded me how important it is for families to have access to the right information and resources as they plan for their loved ones’ futures.
Supporting a Meaningful Cause
I am grateful to have had the opportunity to support Concord in the City and to see the meaningful work they are doing in our community.
